Cyber-security test range to test critical networks

A CYBER-security test range, where utilities and banks can pit their networks against human hackers and computer viruses, is being opened in the UK this week. Teams of “ethical hackers” have been hired to ensure that the range, in Fareham, Hampshire, delivers realistic threats, says a spokesman for Northrop Grumman, which built the facility. The centre has the computing power to simulate attacks on an entire nation’s networks, and a secure dedicated link to the US National Security Agency’s own cyber range in Maryland should help engineers work out how to fight international swarms of virus-infected computers. This week, the UK government placed online attacks on a par with physical acts of terrorism.
